Ona

On Display at Ticketmaster Plaza at Barclays Center

Commissioned for the opening of Barclays Center in 2013, Ona stands over 19 feet tall and weighs nearly 12,000 pounds. The title translates from Polish as “she.” Both imposing and intimate, its undulating form expands from the ground upwards, suggesting a presence that is at once protective and maternal, and evoking a bodily presence that demands attention not only in scale, but also in intricate tactile surface. The piece reflects Von Rydingsvard’s broader body of cedar sculptures, which she transforms into forms that reference pods, fabric, spoons, or bowls.

About the Artist

Ursula Von Rydingsvard (b. 1942, Deesen, Germany) work is represented in the permanent collections of 40 museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Missouri; Storm King Art Center, New York; Art Institute of Chicago and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Permanent commissioned sculptures by von Rydingsvard are on view in multiple public locations including the San Francisco International Airport, California; Stanford University, Palo Alto, California; Princeton University, New Jersey; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge; Bloomberg Corporation, New York; and Barclays Center, New York; among others. Von Rydingsvard has lived and worked in New York City for 49 years and has held a studio in Brooklyn since the 1980s.
