AMERICAN EXPRESS, BROOKLYN NETS, AND BARCLAYS CENTER GIVE GUESTS THE ABILITY TO PAY WITH SMARTPHONES AT EVENTS

Nov 12, 2014

BROOKLYN (Nov. 12, 2014) – American Express, the Brooklyn Nets and Barclays Center are launching a pilot program of the Brooklyn eWallet, a digital payment solution integrated directly into the Brooklyn Nets mobile application1. Built on the American Express Serve® platform, Brooklyn eWallet lets guests use their smartphone to purchase food and drinks at any Barclays Center event without reaching for their wallet.

“Visitors to Barclays Center are constantly using their smartphones around the venue. Now with the eWallet, they can easily and quickly buy food and drinks while interacting with digital content served up by American Express and the Nets,” said Joanna Lambert, senior vice president, Product Development and Management, American Express. “This pilot program continues our innovative partnership with the Nets and Barclays Center to redefine the ways that fans connect and experience events.”

“We are proud to become the first NBA arena to offer a mobile wallet program,” said Brett Yormark, CEO of the Brooklyn Nets and Barclays Center. “Brooklyn eWallet complements the state-of-the-art technology that’s already in Barclays Center and continues our goal to provide the best in-event experience of any sports and entertainment venue.”

Using Brooklyn eWallet is simple. Guests can access the eWallet through the Brooklyn Nets app. It’s easy to add a funding source using the “card snap” capability that scans a plastic credit, charge, debit or prepaid card. Guests can store up to 10 cards, from any issuer, in their eWallet. To pay at a participating concession stand in Barclays Center, guests tap “Make a Purchase” in the eWallet to open the QR code scanner. All they need to do is scan a QR code generated by the merchant with the smartphone camera.

The Brooklyn Nets mobile app is available for free download for both iPhone and Android platforms (available at iTunes store and Google Play store) and features live game scores and stats, an interactive schedule, team news, team roster, Brooklyn Nets Instagram feed and Twitter integration, ticket information, and the ability to post a message to the scoreboard during a game at Barclays Center.

Brooklyn eWallet supports a larger initiative between American Express and the National Basketball Association to deepen fans’ love for the game through innovative digital experiences, including the recently launched “Home Court Advantage” digital destination that delivers custom league content, access to players, and now innovative ways to pay.
