St. Bonaventure’s Adams Earns Player of the Week Honors

RHODE ISLAND'S AKELE NAMED ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

In two Bonnies wins, Adams averaged 23 points, 8.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds and shot 12-of-22 (54.5 percent) from the field, 10-for-16 (62.5 percent) from 3-point range and a nearly perfect 12-of-13 (92.3 percent) at the free throw line. A guard from Baltimore, Md., he also blocked three shots. He scored a career high 30 points in the 97-85 win over Davidson, and had an A-10 high 12 assists to go with 16 points in a win over Niagara Dec. 30. He was 5-for-8 from 3-point range in each game and a percent 11-for-11 at the line against Davidson.

Akele earned his first two collegiate starts in a 2-0 week for Rhode Island. He averaged 8.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.0 steal per game, shooting 54.5 percent (6- of-11) from the floor. That included making 4-of-6 (66.7 percent) from the perimeter. A forward from Treviso, Italy, he set back-to-back career highs, tallying seven points and two steals in 29 minutes in the overtime win at Brown. He then scored six of Rhody’s first 11 points of the game vs. Saint Louis, en route to finishing with a career-high nine points, four rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot in 29 minutes.

Dayton’s Charles Cooke averaged 19.5 points and seven rebounds in two key wins for the Flyers against Arkansas and in the league opener versus Duquesne … UD freshman Sam Miller scored nine points on 4-of-8 shooting against Duquesne … Fordham freshman David Pekarek tallied 10 points and three rebounds against George Washington, hitting 4-of-7 from the field … George Washington’s Tyler Cavanaugh turned in a double-double, tallying a game-high 21 points to go along with 10 rebounds, including knocking down a tough jumper in the lane then hitting a pair of free throws in the closing minutes against Fordham to secure a victory … Jordan Price had a monster scoring week, tallying 25 at Florida Gulf Coast on 9-of-22 from the field, followed by 23 points versus Massachusetts … UMass’ Trey Davis was a consistent shooter last week, hitting 7-for-17 from the field in both wins and was 12-for-14 at the line to average 21.5 points … Four McGlynn hit 10 3-pointers in two wins for Rhode Island last week, including six threes en route to 33 points in an overtime game at Brown … Richmond’s ShawnDre’ Jones scored 22 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assists in the league opener versus Saint Joseph’s … Isaiah Miles had a 17-point, 16-rebound double- double to lift Saint Joseph’s to a conference-opening road win at Richmond … Melvin Johnson scored eight threes in two VCU wins, and shot 9-for-17 (.529) from the field for 22 points in the win over George Mason.
